“Hin Bus Depot is a community art space that supports and nurtures emerging artists by providing a channel for their creativity.” – Hin Bus Depot. Every Sunday the space holds it’s weekly pop-up market.
The old abandoned bus depot was initially used as a space for street artist Ernest Zacharevic’s “Art Is Rubbish Is Art” exhibition in 2014. After the exhibition the team of local artists who worked on it didn’t want to see the space go. So they proposed to turn the space into an independently run permanent gallery.
“Began as a space run by independent artists, Hin Bus Depot has since evolved into a community project run on the belief that there should be no limit to the expression of art – and that each person, no matter their profession, is an art lover and collector at heart” – Hin Bus Depot
It was one of my favourite places to hangout during my time in Penang. Whether sitting in Bricklin cafe with my laptop trying to get motivated and get some work done. Or going down to the popup market that is held there every Sunday. If you want to become involved in the creative community in Penang, it’s a must visit.
As an alternative to sitting in Bricklin cafe the decking area made for a perfect outside work place. It’s a quiet and peace full place. Allowing me to work outside, but also hide away from the busy streets of Georgetown for a while. Surrounded by art & sculptures for inspiration.
