Hostels & Homestays

South East Asia

A good hostel can make or break your experience of a place. During my travels I’ve always found the Towns or Cities where I have end up staying for longer than planned, it’s usually down to the fact I found a hostel that I loved. Here are some recommendations on the best hostels I’ve stayed at in South East Asia.

MALAYSIA

HOSTELS IN KUALA LUMPUR

I spent a lot of my time in Malaysia backwards and forwards to Kuala Lumpur and probably stayed in most hostels in the Bukit Bintang area. These are a few that I would recommend.

Dorms KL

No 5, Jalan Tengkat Tong Shin

Great location right by Jalan Alor (food street) and Changkat where all the bars are. The hostel also has a bar. Entrance is through TG’s nasi kandar restaurant – great for malay food any time of day.

STEP IN TOO

64 & 66 Jalan Pudu Lama, off Jalan Pudu

Right in between Bukit Bintang & china town. One of the more Party hostels. Always people outside and often beer pong being played. Good place to meet people before going out.

DORMS KL 2

20 Jalan Pudu Lama, off Jalan Pudu

This was the hostel I finally settled on after moving around a lot of different ones. Really good social atmosphere, but not a party hostel. Lots of space in the lobby and netflix on the tv plus a good sized covered outside area. Best showers of any hostel I’ve stayed at. Become like my 2nd home.

KAPAS ISLAND

LONG SHA CAMPSITE

Turn right at the jetty – You’ll see the sign

A campsite with tents already there if you don’t have your own. Probably the most chilled & relaxed place I’ve stayed. Volleyball matches and campfires on the beach. Proper island paradise.

TANAH RATA – CAMERON HIGHLANDS

HIKERS SLEEP PORT

34, Jalan Besar, Tanah Rata

The family who own and live here are so friendly. I stayed during ramadan and she would take us to the local market nearby then we would all come back and share what we bought and eat together.

VIETNAM

HANOI

FLIPSIDE HOSTEL

23 Bat Dan street, Hang Bo Ward. Hoan Kiem District

Got stuck here for like a month. Had such a good time I’ve dedicated a whole post to it

I Also recommend staying at the other Flipside hostel in Ho Chi Minh City

Flipside HOSTEL HCM

175/24 Pham Ngu Lao

COCOON INN

114 Hang Buom, Hoan Kiem

Great hostel in a really good location. Probably the best beds and showers of any hostel I stayed at in Vietnam. Great bar and the staff are really friendly.

DALAT

DALAT FAMILY HOSTEL

19 A Triệu Việt Vương str, Ward 3, Dalat City

Got a welcome drink and home cooked food on arrival. Family dinner every night (the best I had in Vietnam). A really sociable vibe and the Super friendly staff really do make everyone feel like family.

MUI NE

Long Son Beach Campground

Xuan Thuy St, Long Son-Suoi Nuoc

It’s right on the beach – Dorm rooms available as well as tents on the beach. It’s a bit out of the way but has a restaurant. I would recommend staying here rather than somewhere in town. Really chilled and social atmosphere.
